gestures in blue is a showing of current work in sculpture, relief and drawing.
The figure raises its head to feel the warmth of a bright orange sun, set against the deep blue of a clear Summer day. Oranges sit plump in the branches of the orchard trees. Clear water drifts lazily down irrigation channels, wispy clouds webbed in ultramarine reflection. Rich red earth crunches under passing boots. Haze on the horizon. The work in this exhibition continues to explore abstract figuration in black steel line, while also introducing elements which have emerged from exploration in my drawing practice. A unified installation of disparate elements - mass against void, line against solid, colour against its absence. The addition of colour into my pieces starts with works on paper. Oil pastel has become my medium of choice - a return to childhood creations made sitting in my dad's office with a box of crayons. |
RE-INFLECTION explores the psychogeographic narratives of urban and suburban spaces. The exhibition combines the imaginative lense of Mateus Brandão’s photography with the linear sculptural style of Thomas Sandberg. The lines of each sculpture intervene in the image-making process, taking mundane, familiar spaces and fragmenting them, while also connecting them together in new ways.
Sculptures displayed on beds of reflective water encourage visitors to take their own photos and reinterpret the gallery space through the same process, becoming active participants in reimagining the landscapes around them. The presence of the sculpture pieces in the centre of the room is in turn disrupted by the photographic works displayed on the walls, where they become inverted, disjointed and re-understood by the framing of the photography. RE-INFLECTION is open at gaffa's Gallery 1 from May 13th to May 24th. Open: Mon-Fri, 10-6 Sat, 11-5 Closed Sundays and Public Holidays 281 Clarence Street Sydney CBD NSW 2000 |
